Trustees’ week blog: Financial governance – how we steward our charity with confidence

In this last blog for Trustees’ Week, Bob Williams, Finance and Funding Trustee, describes the importance of good financial governance. He shares how financial governance is not just about numbers, but about trust, legacy, and doing right by those who support the cause.

At LHCRT, financial governance is more than a set of rules—it’s a shared commitment to doing things properly, transparently, and with care. It’s what allows us to plan, protect our resources, and honour the trust placed in us by our members and volunteers.

Starting with the numbers

Governance is part of our everyday rhythm. Whether we’re reviewing monthly accounts, planning a new section of the restoration, or preparing for a grant application, we start with the numbers—not just to check affordability, but to understand the story they’re telling. Are our reserves healthy? Are we managing risk? Are our financial controls strong enough to support growth?

A culture of clarity and challenge

I’m proud of the way our board approaches these questions. We encourage questions, welcome challenge, and discussion. We also review policies together—always asking, “Is this still fit for purpose?”

Here are a few things we do to keep our financial governance strong with:

  • Clear internal controls, tailored to our size and structure.
  • Regular, accessible financial reports to trustees.
  • Regular review of our reserves and risk policies, adapting as needed.
  • A culture of openness, where financial conversations are welcomed—not feared.

Looking ahead with confidence

We also think ahead. Whether it’s planning for seasonal income dips or exploring new funding opportunities, we use financial governance to guide bold, responsible decisions. It gives us the confidence to know we can continue with our work and to protect our legacy.

Ultimately, financial governance is part of our business as usual. It’s how we show that we’re serious and that we make every pound count. And it’s one of the ways we honour the contributions of everyone who supports us—whether they give time, money, or expertise.
