Our Trustees
Our Trustees hold formal responsibility for the charity and are required to act in its best interests. Each also takes on specific roles within the board.

Carole Mills
Chair
Appointed 2021
A former CEO and CFO across five unitary councils, bringing extensive leadership, governance, organisational improvement and financial expertise. She has held senior roles in local government, health and other public services, and currently also serves as an NHS Non‑Executive Director and Electoral Commissioner.
Christine Howles
Communications and marketing trustee
Appointed 2016.
Full‑time communications lead in the Civil Service, with previous experience across the public sector in a range of infrastructure organisations including housing and utilities. Her career has spanned public relations, digital communications and public‑facing engagement roles. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Colin Booker
Company Secretary and vice chair
Appointed 2021
A qualified management accountant and retired senior forensic accountant with HMRC, where he worked within criminal investigation, specialising in the analysis of complex financial cases. His experience includes regulatory compliance, evidence‑based reporting and financial scrutiny.
Derek Lord
Planning and technical trustee
Appointed 2019.
A Chartered Civil Engineer specialising in road, rail, canal, drainage, sewerage and development infrastructure, with a career spanning both consultancy and the water industry. Now retired from senior roles in a major water company and engineering consultancies, he brings extensive experience in planning, technical design and infrastructure delivery.
Hannah Phillips
Environment trustee
Co-opted 2026.
An environmental management and safety professional with experience in regulatory compliance, risk leadership, operational standards and community‑focused practice.
Peter Hale
Volunteer resources trustee
Appointed 2026.
A retired Chartered Railway Engineer with a long career in rail operations, safety management and major project delivery. His background includes extensive experience in operational planning and the development of safe working practices across complex transport environments.
Robert Brasher
Land and property trustee
Appointed 2026.
A former Chartered Surveyor and commercial estates specialist with experience in land management, property negotiations and transactions, strategic estate development and stakeholder negotiation. His career includes senior roles across the commercial property sector.

Oversees all on‑site restoration activity, supports and guides the construction team leaders, ensures safety standards are met, and keeps the project moving efficiently so volunteers can focus on delivering high‑quality, well‑coordinated progress.
Paul Marshall
Technology manager
Creates and edits videos and photos, manages live‑streaming for events, develops and maintains the website technical side ensuring it runs smoothly, securely, and supports all our digital activity.
Philip Skelton
Green team leader
Coordinates the work and volunteers who care for our canal corridor, oversees all grounds‑care and habitat‑management tasks, supports and assesses Duke of Edinburgh volunteers, and organises our corporate volunteering days, ensuring everyone feels welcomed, guided, and able to contribute safely.
