Our major £100,000 fundraising appeal to restore the final 230 metres of the Lichfield Canal at Gallows Reach has reached a significant milestone, with £25,000 now pledged towards our first target.
This achievement brings us one step closer to completing the third and final phase of Gallows Reach – the missing link between the existing water‑filled sections at Borrowcop Locks Canal Park and the section at Gallows Wharf. Once complete, this phase will deliver a continuous stretch of restored, watered canal through Gallows Reach, reconnecting historic sections and enhancing the landscape for wildlife and local people.
Following an unsuccessful grant application, we asked the public to help fund this vital stage of the restoration. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, we have now reached the pledge milestone required to take part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge.
These pledges will help double donations made by the public during the campaign week in December and could also unlock additional Champion match funding from the Big Give Champions.
Christine Howles, Communications & Marketing Trustee at LHCRT, said:
“Thank you to everyone who has pledged – your support has brought us to this important milestone. With the right investment, we can bring water back to this historic stretch of canal, create new habitats, strengthen wildlife corridors and provide local people with a beautiful, safe route for walking, cycling and improving wellbeing.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity shown so far, and we hope supporters will continue to back the appeal when it launches in December.”
