St John’s Grange

Background

The canal route at St John’s Grange was transferred to LHCRT in 2024, securing the canal route and allowing volunteers to begin detailed planning and early restoration work.

This stretch of canal will eventually link restored sections at Gallows Wharf with the section along Falkland Road, through a planned culvert under the railway line and an existing culvert under Birmingham Road.

This section was partly prepared by Persimmon Homes during the construction of the housing estate, and will be completed by our volunteers in the future.

What to see

Although restoration is still in progress, visitors can already see important landmarks and look for hidden features:

  • The new line of the canal running through the St John’s Grange estate
  • The bridges over the canal (with hidden culverts beneath)
  • The winding hole.
  • Lock 23 currently hidden under ground

What’s next?

A planning application is being prepared so that work can begin on this section once Gallows Reach is completed. This section will require rebuilding the historic Lock 23, and the construction of a new Lock 22.
