Darnford Moors Ecology Park

Background

Darnford Moors was one of the first sites we bought, in the 1990s. Darnford Brook runs along side the canaI channel and crosses beneath it. It is bordered by Darnford Lane and Cappers Lane, and intersects Darnford Moors Golf Club so is surrounded by countryside.

Major work has been carried out to develop the area into an ecology park with water and land habitats, thanks to funding from ERDF, HS2 CEF, Biffa Award and the Wesleyan Foundation.

The next stages will be to build the bridge under Darnford Lane to the west, and to link up with the Huddlesford arm to the east (once HS2 has completed work at Cappers Lane).

What to see

Walk along the towpath, under newly planted fruit trees, continue to the wetlands on the left, across the lift bridge and then walk back, along the nature trail through the coppice and see old lock 29, before returning to the start.

The walk is circular and approximately 1km in total.

The towpath is level and laid with stone chippings, the nature trail is accessible but more challenging for wheelchair access.

Look out for:

  • Culvert sections – these will become the tunnel under Darnford Lane in the future.
  • The names on the sheet piling – whose name can you see?
  • Wildfowl – can you see any ducks? An egret was spotted there last year. What other wildlife can you see?
  • Birds of prey can often be seen circling above. What are they looking for? Can you see any rabbits or other small mammals?
