Far sighted? Your name could be on the Lichfield Canal far into the future with our 2020 Piling Appeal

Channel protection for the highly visible section beside Falkland Road and Tamworth Road enable donors to have a personal tag attached to the steel piling to acknowledge their contibution.

ONLY £20.00 per pile

Where is my Tag? - this page  lists the sponsor's message tags so far and where to find them.

Please note: We are currently experiencing delays in the installation of more piling and are working to resolve the issue.

June 2020 - Piling began

In January 2020, Staffordshire County Council transferred ownership to our Trust the first length of the Falkland Road environmental corridor, reserved since the bypass was constructed in 2006. This will accommodate a diversion of the Lichfield Canal replacing the original route past the historic Sandfields Waterworks which has been redeveloped since the canal was legally closed in 1954.

Steel sheet piling is a well-proven, robust, long-term solution to water containment where the bank has to be supported, such as for the towpath, or there is limited land available. The Falkland Road section adjoins the now largely complete Fosseway Heath section with its public Nature Trail and will add another length to the popular Heritage Towpath Trail flanking the Lichfield Canal.

Whilst our Trust is grateful for the generosity of donors who support the cause, here is an opportunity for you to be recognised by a brief name tag permanently attached to the sponsored piles: for example, a personal name, a memorable pet, a Club group or secret code known to the donor! At Darnford, shown in the photo below, there are 400 tags from 20 years ago as an acknowledgement to those donors.

October 2020 - Piling progress

Pending acquisition from Staffordshire County Council of the remaining length towards Birmingham Road, work is now largely complete on the initial 85-metre length shown here. The 300 metal tags ordered with donations are being embossed for fixing as quickly as possible.

March 2021- The tags are going on

The volunteers behind the scenes have engraved and painted the first batch of the requested name tags and the first batch have been fitted.
Thanks so much to all our supporters who have so generously given to our piling appeal which is still open.

October 2020 - Piling begins at  Tamworth Road

Meanwhile, work is now in progress at Gallows Reach, just off Tamworth Road, where a narrow section has to be piled.

We thank all contributors for responding to this popular 2020 PILING Appeal.

Please note: The Trust will make every effort to fix a tag with a message of your choice in your preferred location but cannot make any guarantees as to the time scale, or the location. We are currently experiencing delays in the installation of more piling and are working to resolve the issue. No responsibility can be accepted for errors and omissions although we will always try to correct any mistakes.
